AU Optronics's (AUO) newly unveiled 6G LTPS LCD factory in Kunshan, eastern China, has obtained LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum Certification from the US Green Building Council, according to the company.

The factory is designed to save energy by 50% and recover 90% of used water, AUO said.

The factory has monthly production capacity of 25,000 glass substrates and began installation of production equipment and facilities in April 2016, with its first panel being lit up in August, company chairman and CEO Paul Peng noted.

AUO has a 3.5G LTPS factory in Taiwan and a 4.5G one in Singapore, the former having annual production capacity of five million AMOLED panels mainly for smartwatches and the latter having a capacity for 10 million AMOLED panels used in VR (virtual reality) devices and 15 million LTPS TFT-LCD panels for smartphones. The 6G Kunshan fab is able to produce 60 million LTPS TFT-LCD panels for smartphones and two million units for high-end notebooks.

AUO said it is the globally largest supplier of automotive CID (central information display) panels with a global market share of 20%, notebook-use oTP (on-cell touch panels) with a 90% global share.
